The agricultural lighting sector attracts more marketing rhetoric than almost any other category. But for a real production barn, the really important indicator is far from as pleasant: whether the lamps can hold ammonia gas, hold washing, and stabilize the output throughout the production cycle.

Ammonia gas is the most suitable specification for screening suppliers. The atmosphere in poultry houses and pig houses can corrode conventional aluminum reflectors, some brands of polycarbonate, and unprotected electronic components. Equipment for such buildings should be able to demonstrate the basis for passing the high-concentration ammonia exposure test, and the materials of the diffusion cover and enclosure must be clearly named rather than generally described.

The cleaning method determines the waterproof specifications. Between batches, the barn is flushed with high-pressure water, and steam or cleaning agents are used in some cases. That is IP66 or IP69K operating conditions, not IP65; and failure in such flushing scenarios usually occurs first at the cable inlet and sealing ring.

When lighting is part of the production system rather than just lighting-chicken sheds, laying hens sheds, dairy sheds with a clear sunshine regime-photoperiod requirements must be included in the design. Take the EU's broiler production rules as an example, which require a specified dark period to be set during each 24-hour period and a minimum light level to be maintained during the light phase; the control system must be able to stably implement this time period throughout the feeding period without Drifting.

Dust is the last consideration. Feed dust will fall everywhere and block the hot channel that maintains drive heat dissipation in the enclosed housing.
